Chapter 20: Sydney's Opera House & Aquarium
Sydney Postcard
Sydney .. Opera House, Aquarium, Bondi Beach! All the words that evoke our impression of that lovely city.
Once again we were lucky enough to be staying with cousins - this time Bernard's cousin Christopher and his family. So needless to say, barbies & beers (dont know if I am spelling that right!) and lots of great food and company. They have two sons and the five kids took over the house! We were there for Anzac Day, so learned alot of history and got a forward reference for our visit to Turkey. But we also got the company of the cousins for an extra day!
We visited some lovely beaches, esp the famous Bondi .. the surf is really different down here, and the kids loved it. (Now we know why Matthew felt that Goa beaches were too calm!)
And then we ventured into the city. We had not hired a car, and we commuted via public transport - all very doable. We even made our way to the airport with all the luggage and kids via the subway/train with little angst and in no time. We spent time at the Aquarium. WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! I am told that the Aquariums in Brisbane and Cairns are better, so you will have to figure that out for yourself. Andrew spent hours in the Shark room .. I will not spoil the !WOW! effect for you! There is a great room with the Great Barrier Reef with lots of Nemos and his relatives and friends!
Then, the highlight of the trip for Ian - a visit to the Sydney Opera House. If each of us has a 'thing to do' on this trip, this was Ian's. And he loved every minute. We were lucky enough to run into a very nice lady there who offered us free tickets to a viewing of the Ballet that was running while we were there. OK that was not Ian and Andrew's favorite part of the visit, but Sarah & I loved the detail, the training and the costumes! Then we did a tour of the building with a lovely tour guide. What a great contribution to Sydney's skyline!
The weather here has been getting cooler and some trees are beginning to go the reds of autumn back home. And we leave for warmer climes ....
